Microsoft Yields - Windows 8.1 Update Deadline Extended
Microsoft has announced that, unless you upgrade to Windows 8.1 Update (think of it like a service pack) users will no longer receive updates and support for Windows 8.1. The deadline was set for May 13th, but Microsoft bailed on this deadline the day before it would pass and, instead, extended the deadline. The update is crucial if you are using Windows 8.1 and desire to continue receiving patches for the operating system.
While a lot of people are sure to breathe a sigh of relief, the threat is still there. Without the most recent patches, your computer and business will be at a much greater risk, especially if you are running an older operating system.
There is still some good news here, however. Microsoft has thrown a bone to business owners and given them a much later deadline - August 12th - to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Update. This also has given them an extension on updating their Windows Server R2 software, though this mainly applies to those who use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Intune, or System Center Configuration to update their systems. This decision was made to counter the angry outcries of consumers who thought the previous deadline wasn't nearly enough time to upgrade.
So, will Microsoft hold their ground this time and enforce their decision? Or will they yield once again to the demands of the populace? Who can say? Either way, there is no excuse not to upgrade. You have at least another month to update your operating system, which is plenty of time. Not upgrading your system is like playing Russian Roulette. All it takes is one lucky shot from a hacker to disable your system for good.
