7 Funny-Yet-Sad Technology Statistics
It's embarrassing to get technology terms mixed up with other terms that have nothing to do with technology. If you've found yourself confused by the latest tech terms, then don't feel bad. According to a recent survey of 2,392 adults by Vouchercloud.net, mix ups like this are a fairly common occurrence.
In the study, people picked the definition of the word that they thought was correct via multiple choice. For those of us in the know, the results are pretty humorous, and even a little sad, because the definitions people selected are way off. What makes all of this even more funny is the fact that 61% of respondents said, "It's important to have a good knowledge of technology in this day and age." We completely agree that being familiar with technology is a big part of being successful in today's business world, and as you can tell from this study, not every person totally gets every basic technology concept.
77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means.
SEO stands for "Search-Engine Optimization."
27% identified "gigabyte" as an insect commonly found in South America.
A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.
42% said they believed a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship."
A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
23% thought an "MP3" was a "Star Wars" robot.

As technology professionals, we find this list to be very entertaining; and we think that it can do more than just provide us with a good laugh. This list can also teach us a thing or two about the people we serve. We tend to take the knowledge of basic tech terms like these for granted, but that doesn't mean that every client we serve knows exactly what we're talking about when it comes time for us to explain a computer issue, and that's okay.
