Is Work Invading Your Home Life?

It’s difficult to tell where the line should be drawn between your home life and your work life--especially around the holidays. Mobile technology has made this more challenging than ever before, so much so that it is out of character for a business professional to be disconnected from the office for too long. How can you find that precious balance between work and life and cling to it, even during the holiday season?

It’s difficult to tell where the line should be drawn between your home life and your work life--especially around the holidays. Mobile technology has made this more challenging than ever before, so much so that it is out of character for a business professional to be disconnected from the office for too long. How can you find that precious balance between work and life and cling to it, even during the holiday season?

The first step is realizing how mobile technology affects those who work in a fast-paced working environment. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops have allowed business professionals to access mission-critical applications from anywhere at any time. This lets users perform their workplace responsibilities without being tethered to their desks, which can make a world of difference for productivity and deadlines. Since mobile technology makes for a more flexible workplace experience, it’s easy to see the benefits.

Unfortunately, these benefits also come with negative side-effects. According to an Accenture survey, 70% of respondents claim that technology enables work to invade their home life, whether they like it or not. It’s important to make sure that you don’t lose sight of the work/life balance, and we’re here to help with that.

Stop the “Always On” Mentality
Mobile technology is one of those things that, if not used efficiently, can be detrimental to your success. It can increase stress levels unnecessarily. If you’re always available, you’ll feel inclined to work, even when you’re not supposed to be. It’s up to both you as the employer, and your employees to know when you’re working too hard, or too much. If you can work out what is expected of your employees, you’ll have an easier time making sure that they aren’t overdoing it.

Coordinate with Your Team Members
Again, the best way to approach mobility and flexibility is to communicate with others to make sure that they all know what is expected of them. Be sure that someone who isn’t on vacation is capable of handling tasks without bothering those who are out of the office for a day off. Mobile technology might be able to find the most efficient way to solve problems, but it’s not necessarily the best way. Would you call your boss to solve a problem when they are out of the office without trying to solve the issue on your own first?
